Make the next plan.

Good conversations deserve a chance to happen again.

Mention something you actually remember

You do not need a perfect opening message. “Really enjoyed coffee today. That movie you mentioned is on my list now” tells them who you are and what you liked about the conversation.

Keep it short. A new friendship does not need a big explanation about how hard it is to make friends. You can just say you enjoyed meeting them.

Invite them to something specific

Try: “I’m checking out that cafe Sunday at 11. Want to come?” Or: “You mentioned wanting to walk more. Want to do a short walk Saturday morning?” Choose something public, affordable, and easy to leave.

Include a day or a couple of options. If you know they work weekends, suggest a weekday instead. Make it easy to answer without asking them to plan everything.

Let a no be a no

If they are busy and suggest another time, work with that. If they decline without offering one, you can reply warmly and leave it there.

A missed message can have lots of explanations. You can send one brief follow-up if you want, but repeated messages will not make a friendship feel easier. Put your time into people who also make room for you.

Choose a repeatable plan

After a second good hangout, suggest doing it again. A regular coffee, walk, or game night means every meeting does not need a fresh idea.

Leave room for the relationship to change. Some people become close friends. Some are good company at a weekly activity. Both can make your life better.

Common questions

Do I have to wait before texting?

No. You can send a short message when you want to. There is no need to turn a friendly follow-up into a timing game.
