You showed up. What do you say?

A few easy ways to get a coffee conversation going.

Start with what is right in front of you

“Hey, I’m Michael. Is this the meetup?” works. Once you have found your group, ask if anyone has been to the cafe before. You already have a place and a plan in common; use them.

Get a drink if you want one, sit where everyone can hear each other, and put your phone away. You do not need to prove anything in the first minute.

Ask something people can answer in their own way

Try “What have you been doing for fun lately?” or “What’s a place around here you keep going back to?” These leave room for a hobby, a story, or a simple recommendation.

Follow the answer instead of working through a list. If someone mentions cooking, ask what they have been making. Share a little about yourself too. A conversation should not feel like an interview.

Give the quieter person a way in

If two people have been talking for a while, open the question to the table: “Have either of you tried that?” Give them time to answer without calling attention to how quiet they have been.

You can also change the subject when a conversation depends on inside knowledge. “How did you get into that?” lets everyone understand the story.

Awkward moments are allowed

A pause does not mean the meetup is going badly. Take a sip. Ask what someone is looking forward to this week. You are people meeting for the first time, and it may take a little while.

If a topic feels too personal, you can say, “I’d rather skip that one.” You do not owe a stranger an explanation.

End with a small, real invitation

If you enjoyed the conversation, say so. “This was fun. Want to do coffee again next Saturday?” is clearer than “We should hang out sometime.”

Exchange contact details only if you both want to. If someone declines, keep it friendly. The goal is to find people you enjoy, not make every conversation turn into a friendship.

Common questions

What if I arrive late?

Use the meetup’s chat or contact instructions if available. When you find the group, say a quick hello, introduce yourself, and join the conversation without a long apology.
